In the Fall of 2022, Liz began collecting and cleaning over 2000 Oxeye sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides) seeds from plants she had added to her garden the year before. When Luna reached out to Sayeh to ask about purchasing sunflower seeds for Withrow Ave JPS ‘s Earth day programming in April, Sayeh contacted Liz. It was clear that supporting the students at Withrow would be an excellent use of Liz’s hard work so Sayeh even included soil packed in small paper bags as well as fiber pots for the children.
Some of the extra seeds and supplies along with seedlings grown by Withrow Gardens’ team were given away at the Danforth Nature and Climate Expo that took place on May 6th, and the sunrise ceremony and pow wow at Wandering Spirit school on June 15th
This project has led to new friendships and collaboration between the Underhill Seedsitters group and Luna and her group of parents supporting our public education system. You can follow and support the great work of the Withrow gardens group on facebook at:
