When I reached out to my neighbors about creating a seed-sitting group, I was delighted to meet Christine who has a passion for protecting the environment and promoting sustainable lifestyles through her instagram and consulting business: Buying Thyme. As a member of Project Swallowtail’s Underhill Seedsitters, she has documented her winter sowing, and spread the word about Project Swallowtail. One thing you’ll notice is that she uses translucent detergent containers that are similar to the milk jugs championed in the US. She cuts them with a cutter and uses duct tape to close them up.
As a veteran winter-sowing expert, she single-handedly took on 8 varieties of seeds and as you would expect, they are growing!!! She has a geodesic dome as a greenhouse in her backyard and just sent me pictures of the seeds that have already sprouted.
She’s already got big plans for this year as she will be moving to a 1 acre property in North Oshawa that she plans on making into a permaculture farm filled with native plants. She hopes that this will inspire other families with the curiosity and desire to live sustainably to do the same. Of course, our entire team is already invited to visit her there.
Next post, I will begin sharing pictures of sprouted seeds from our group. Please email them to me and if yours pots are not showing any signs of sprouting, try the following:
- Make sure they are moist and water daily
- make them a bit warmer by creating a mini greenhouse. This can be as simple as covering them with clear plastic, or moving them in an enclosed patio.
- Visit them daily! You’d be surprised what can happen in a day!
Happy Growing!
